How to Own Your Time and 10X Productivity + November Done-For-You Content Prompts
The hacks that have *changed* my working life.
Rewind a few years and I used to have a chronic problem of constantly feeling like I just couldn’t get anything done. I knew how to craft a nice tasklist and was doing a pretty significant job at being productive, but I constantly felt like I was behind where I needed to be.
In the evenings, I never felt like I could unplug and wind down. Weekends were no different. I loved the work I was doing, but between all the hats I was trying to juggle, something was not working. (Can you relate?)
One of the perks of being married to an entrepreneur is that a lot of good advice flows out at our dinner table. He suggested a few, helpful reads and the key takeaways have transformed how I approach work. Namely, how to schedule tasks sustainably to avoid burnout.
So, today, I want to outline the key few strategies that have become guiding principles for how I dive into everything I do. Hopefully, in your journey managing most (or every) aspect of your business, this list will support you in being more strategic with your time.
Here are a few strategies to help you make that shift:
Give your tasks time. Obviously, it’s impossible to know the exact time commitment required to complete a task but do your best to come up with a ballpark and pencil it in next to the task.
If a task is too big, break it down. Some tasks aren’t going to be finished in a day. Make individual line items for specific parts of these bigger tasks so you can easily time and schedule them.
Give your time tasks. Preplan what you are going to accomplish during each allotted work time during the week then stick to it. If your planner says scheduling social media happens on Tuesday and writing two articles for your website is on Friday, only do those tasks on those days.
Plan for a catchup day. Some weeks, the schedule runs great. Others, you never get a chance to look at it. Designated a day a week, and maybe even a week a month, for flexible catchup time. If you don’t need to catch up on anything, use this time to get ahead for the following week or work on a special task that you didn’t have time to dive into during your normally scheduled work times.
